Ruth "Hazel" Matthews Smith enter into eternal life on Saturday July 27, 2013. She was born January 31, 1924 in Nash County to the late Charles Daniel Matthews Sr. and Mary Menda Rich Matthews.

Hazel is survived by one son Barry Smith of Orlando Florida and two sisters Rachel M. Joyner and Alice Mae Allen both of Nashville N.C. Preceded in death by her husband Franklin Barrington Smith; four brothers Willie Gray Matthews, Horace Greely Matthews Sr., Henry Clay Matthews and Charles Daniel Matthews Jr.; four sisters Beulah Mae Matthews, Addie Lee Rowe, Pauline Grace Privette and Lucile Hermann. Hazel resided in Baltimore MD most of her adult life, active in her personal ministry.
She served as Church Secretary at Temple Baptist Church for 20 years. Hazel also served as Telephone Counselor for Billy Graham Crusades held in the greater Baltimore area. Upon retirement in 1989, Hazel moved to Rocky Mount, N.C. where she continued her personal Ministry to include Children's Choir Director, Pregnancy Center Volunteer, and Local AARP President.
As a Writer and Poet she wrote many children's songs, poems, and published a book entitled "A Book of Prayers for Children". Copies of the Book are available through Peachtree Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the charity of your personal choice. Burial with a private graveside service will be held at Peachtree Baptist Church Cemetery, Spring Hope, N.C. A word of gratitude from Nephew E. Lindsey Matthews & wife Phyllis B. Matthews to her many friends, neighbors, Trinity Villas Assisted Living Staff and Nash General Hospital Staff who all shown great concern, compassion and support for my Aunt.
