Edward William Butler, born March 18, 1942 in Sacramento, passed away April 12, 2013 at his home in Cool, Calif., at the age of 71.
He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Susan Butler; children, Kevin Butler (Linnea) of Wash., Kerri Jarnagin (Philip) of Texas, Kenneth Butler of Wash., Stephen Binning (Bridget) of Elk Grove and Katy Ellis (Brian) of Grass Valley. He is also survived by his siblings, Bob Rhodes (Pat) of Wash., Judy Brown (John) of Wash., Dale Butler of Carmichael and Joy Abel (Terry) of Roseville. Ed had many nieces, nephews and grandchildren who will miss their 'Papa'.
Born in Sacramento to Lloyd Butler and Goldie Arndt, he graduated from Sacramento High School in 1960. He worked as a stage hand prior to joining the Sacramento City Fire Department in 1965. He retired as Captain at Engine 12 after 30 years with the Dept. He taught Fire Science at American River College and worked as a Fire Investigator after retirement. He and his wife Susan retired to Auburn Lake Trails in 2000 where they enjoyed tending to their garden, golfing, fishing and friends. He was a member of SIRS and the Obtuse Angler Fishing Club. He was an avid history buff, loved traveling to Hawaii with Susan and had many meaningful moments with his family.
Ed will be remembered for his dedication to his firefighting career and his devotion to his family. He had tremendous patience, treated all people with kindness and loved playing Santa on Christmas Eve for the grandkids. He will be deeply missed.
