Harold "Hal" Clifford Nelson passed away peacefully with family by his side on December 15, 2012 at Kaiser Hospital in Roseville, California after surviving and battling to overcome, a debilitating and paralyzing stroke for more than 15 months. He was 74. Only son to George and Zenna Nelson. He is survived by his wife, Jackie of Loomis; daughters: Tracey Porter (Jim) of Long Beach, Darcie Hubbard (Kelly) of Salinas, Todd (Janet) of Loomis and Thomas (Stacey) of Granite Bay. Hal is also survived by his sister, May, of Portland, Oregon; eight grandchildren: Amanda Prows (Kelly) of Portland, Oregon, Valerie Hennessey (Devin) of Long Beach, Amelia Hubbard, Chandler Hubbard, Race, Sydney, Dane, and Colton; and two great-grandsons: Draegon and Magnus Hennessey; and one great-granddaughter, Audrey Prows. Hal was dearly loved by all his family including many extended family members who are not mentioned here.
Hal graduated from Jefferson High School, Portland, Oregon in 1957, was recruited by Coach Bill Bowerman and ran High Hurdles for the now Pack 12 powerhouse, University of Oregon, where he pledged Theta Chi Fraternity, graduating with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Parks and Recreation Administration, a wife, two daughters and a job, in 1962. Hal worked for a number of different cities and BART in his long working career…Hal was especially passionate about being involved in the community. Hal was proud to have been a member of Rotary International
, the Elks, Moose and the Masons. In El Dorado Hills, SIRS, Community Vision Coalition, New Comers and playing Bridge and Mexican Train. In Loomis, "Gramps" drove carpool as a "Friend of Del Oro", participated as a volunteer meet timer for Del Oro Track & Field and Del Oro Cross Country as well as Placer Elementary School Track and Field and Cross Country.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in Hal's name to the Del Oro High School Cross Country Team (3301 Taylor Road, Loomis, CA 95650) or Placer Elementary School Running program (8650 Horseshoe Bar Rd. Loomis, CA 95650) where Hal was ever present to help the teams time events and watch his grandsons, Race and Dane, compete over the years.
Hal was an especially warm, generous, genuine, loving person. He will always be loved and deeply missed by his family and many friends! A celebration of his life will be held on Friday Feb 1, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the St Stephen's Lutheran Church, 1001 Olson Lane, El Dorado Hills, California.
