Margaret Claire Hellar (Machell)
1933 - 2013
After a long and fulfilling life, Claire Hellar died February 21, 2013 in Friday Harbor, Washington. Claire was born in 1933 in Hollywood California and moved to Meadow Vista in 1948. She graduated from Placer High School (1951) and attended Placer (Sierra) College. Claire was a master gardener, avid reader, seamstress, diverse ceramic artist, political "junkie" and caring mother and grandmother.
Claire met Mick Hellar, and after a three month romance they married. She was active in the community as an artist and supporter of the arts, election official and member of the Auburn Placer County Library Board. In 1985 Claire and Mick moved to a log cabin on Waldron Island in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. For over 20 years Claire was an indispensable and beloved part of the Waldron Community. She lead the effort to create the first emergency response team on the island. Claire and Mick's cabin was always open to all community residents for coffee, compassion and thoughtful conversation.
Claire will be missed by her three children, James Hellar and his wife Val of Orcas Island, Washington, Nicole Lundin and her husband Richard of Goldendale, Washington, and Monica Woodall and her husband Drew of Greenwood, California; grandchildren, Serra Benson and Morgan Hellar of Washington, Emily and Asha Woodall of California; and great-grandchildren, Jai Wachtel, Penelope Benson, and Cormac Hellar Dayao. Claire was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Mick Hellar in 2011 and in 2007 by her grandson, Corporal James Lundin of Bellport, New York and Orcas Island, Washington.
Claire was loved by her family and will be greatly missed by them and all of her friends.
