Marjorie (Marj) May McGranahan

Marjorie (Marj) May McGranahan, 99, of Roseville, Calif., passed away on October 6, 2013 in Auburn, Calif.
Marj McGranahan was born on September 2, 1914 in McComb, Ohio to Judson Parker and Zella Fern McGranahan. She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Mildred McGranahan. She graduated from McComb High School and Findlay College, both in Ohio. She came to California to take graduate classes at UC Berkeley and stayed to teach in the Sacramento area
A science teacher for many years in the San Juan Unified School District she was part of the faculty that opened La Sierra High School in 1957. She was also the science department head at Ponderosa High School in Shingle Springs, Calif. Through the years she also maintained an active involvement in her family's Ohio farm which was started in 1902- working there with her sister during most of her summer breaks from teaching.
An environmentalist to the core, an endowed scholarship at the University of Findlay in her name supports those who are "aware of mankind's place in the ecosystem" and who will in turn become "stewards of the land." Marj was an amazing teacher whose incredible thirst for knowledge was contagious. She was a "walking encyclopedia" when it came to nature and wildlife - to go on a walk with her in the forest was an unforgettable learning experience. She will be remembered for her sage expertise and advice.
She also built her life around amazing friendships with Alma Knatz, Helen and Bob Atteberry and family, Ella Stanford, Howard Papworth, teaching friends and students, and parishioners at First United Methodist Church in Roseville.
After retiring from teaching she volunteered in the community at locations such as the Sacramento Zoo and through her church. She was "flipping pancakes" at Mission Oaks Community Center breakfasts into her 90s. She lived at Roseville Commons for many years.
Memorial services will be held on October 11, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Roseville. 109 Washington Boulevard, Roseville, CA 95678. The Reverend Steve Pudinski will be presiding.
