Smitty served in the Naval Reserves and the Army for a combination of 3 years and worked at McClellan AFB from 1966 where he retired in 1979. Additionally, he worked and retired in 2008 from the San Francisco Cow Palace. Introduced to the world of rodeo in 1968, it quickly became a large part of his life. He was an active member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA), working for the Flying U Rodeo for 44 years. For 35 years, he has been an integral part of the Folsom Pro Rodeo. "Smitty is the personification of everything the Rodeo stands for in our community" reflected Joe Gagliardi, President/CEO of the Folsom Chamber. The Folsom Chamber honored his dedicated service by naming him as Grand Marshall of the Folsom Cattle Drive and the Folsom Pro Rodeo. Everyone knew it was "Rodeo Time" when Smitty's trailer pulled into town. His capable and hard working hands were the magic behind a successful rodeo.
A true cowboy at heart, Smitty loved to tease his friends and family. He loved country and gospel music. He was an ace at bingo, bowling and dominoes. A man of many talents, he recently took up weaving. An enthusiastic fan of the Sacramento River Cats, he made time for games in his busy schedule. He never came across a stranger. With a smile, he would give you the shirt off his back. He had a zest for life that was an inspiration to so many that knew him and loved him.
