Barbara Jane Haffey passed away on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 4:30 in the morning at the age of 87.
"Jane," as she was known to family and friends, was born on August 4, 1923 in Oakland, California to Calvin and Leila Haffey. During World War II Jane served in the U. S. Army at Fort Lewis, Washington. After the war she was employed as a machinist at McClellan Field Air Force Base until her retirement. ln retirement she served the Applegate community in many ways, including volunteer work at the Applegate Library. She was instrumental in getting a new library building in Applegate, and her sister Edna donated much of the landscaping for the project. She also helped build a playground at the library which was later dedicated in her name. "Building" was one of Jane's well known skills she built her Applegate home with her own two hands! Jane contributed in so many ways to the people of Applegate. She was on the committee to raise funds for the Applegate Fire Department in 1983, as well as serving on the Board of Directors of the Civic Center. She was also very involved with the annual Easter egg hunt. With her close friend Marian Oliver they started the "Krafty Klatchers" group where friends could meet every Tuesday for crafts and fellowship.
Jane is survived by one brother, Calvin "Bill" Haffey of Bakersfield, California. She is also survived by a nephew, Michael Haffey of Mt. Vernon, Washington, and nieces Rene Fluery of Mt. Vernon, Washington; Shawna Martinez of Penryn, California; Penny Harding of Sacramento, and Susan Haffey of Los Angeles. A brother, Edward Haffey, and a sister, Edna Anderson, preceded her in death. She will be greatly missed by her many dear friends in Applegate.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, November 4, 2010 at the Chapel of the Hills, 1331 Lincoln Way, Auburn, with Pastor Vern Nakasone officiating. Following the service a special time of remembrance will be hosted at 2:30 p.m. at the Applegate Civic Center, 18914 Applegate Road. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, a gift be made to the "Friends of the Applegate Library" (F.O.A.L.), P.O.Box 556, Applegate, CA 95703.
