Evelyn Freeland passed away at her home in Weimar, January 25, 2014 after a long illness. Evelyn was born March 3, 1915 in Oakland, California to Rose and Martin Sauer, Jr. She was the oldest of seven children. Evelyn lived most of her childhood in the Mendocino area and graduated from Jackson High School in Jackson, Calif. in 1933.
Evelyn first came to Placer County in 1935 after accepting a waitress job at the Baxter Restaurant in Baxter. It was there she met and married her husband Victor Freeland, who ran a pack train to supply miners in the American River Canyon. They lived in the Bay Area for the first 10 years of their marriage but returned to Baxter in 1946 when they had an opportunity to lease and manage the restaurant and hotel there. Evelyn continued to manage the 24 hour business until she retired in 1982. She then moved to Bowman where she lived for 28 years before moving to live with her daughter in Weimar.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband Victor Freeland (1971), son Vic Jr. (2012); brother Robert, sisters Alta and Joyce. She is survived by: daughters Diane Hughes of Weimar, Connie Rodger of Cottonwood; grandchildren Laura Rodger, Lee Rodger, Lynn Arnold, June Poncetta, Michele Edelmuth (Will), Corey Hughes (Ana Rosa), Amy Arant (Tony); eleven great-grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren.
Evelyn will be fondly remembered by family and friends for her generosity, hard work and caring manner.
Graveside services will be at the Colfax Cemetery on Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. with reception to follow in Weimar.
