Howard Philip Federer, age 93 years, passed away on October 13, 2010 in Chico, Calif.
Howard was born August 6, 1917 to Philip and Emily Federer in Auburn, California. He was raised in Auburn and graduated from Placer Union High School in 1935. Howard then graduated from Heald Business College in Sacramento.
Howard served in the US Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. He spent two years building a supply base in the New Hebrides and two years on the USS Bingham, a 15,000 ton attack transport. He was a storekeeper first class and earned a Bronze Star.
On January 25, 1946 Howard married the former Jacqueline Marie Dove. They were married for sixty years and lived in Auburn the majority of that time.
Howard was employed by PG&E in Auburn, Drum Division, for 39 years. He worked on a line crew and retired as a foreman's clerk in 1977. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, and sports, especially baseball. He was a San Francisco Giants fan and attended many Giants games including the World Series at Candlestick Park in 1962 and more recently a game at ATT Park on his 90th birthday. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife to Hawaii and the Caribbean.
Howard was predeceased in 2006 by his wife Jacqueline. He is survived by his two daughters, Helen Scott of San Francisco and Patricia Sagers of Chico and by his granddaughter Hillary Colby of Chico of whom he is most proud. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Helen Bell of Auburn, nieces Susan Nott and Robin Langdon; nephews Jeff Jones and Byron Ruth, and several grand-nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his companion for the past 15 years, his Siamese cat Gabby, and all of his caring "family" at the Country House.
A service will be held at the Auburn Cemetery at 1040 Collins Road in Auburn at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 16, 2010. Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of your choice in care of Newton-Bracewell Funeral Home in Chico. The obituary may be viewed and condolences sent online at
