Jim was born in Oklahoma on January 5, 1923 and passed away in Auburn, California on September 10, 2013. James went to schools in Oklahoma and Colorado, and moved to Buena Park, California in 1941. He worked at Knotts Berry Farm, joined the Orange County Labor Union, and also worked building the Santa Ana Airbase Los Alamitos Air Station. In 1942 he joined the U.S. Navy serving two years aboard the USS Mission Bay Aircraft Carrier in the Atlantic. When he was attending Navy school in Bremerton, Washington he met Ellouise of Tacoma, Washington. After many letters they married. On July 5, 2013 they celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary.
Jim had worked in several trades but his main trade has been carpentry. In 1966 he formed his own business CHA/BIC Corp., building in Fullerton, Garden Grove, San Clemente, Long Beach, and Newport Beach, California. He sold his company and moved to Bullhead City, Arizona in 1999, and resided there for 15 years. He moved back to the Auburn, California area in 2012. Jim was raised a Master Mason in Buena Park, California and served all of his years to the order.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Claude Alexander Chastain and Elsie Farmer Chastain; sons, James A. Chastain, Jr., and Richard L. Chastain; brother, Thruman and Aliva; and sister, Maxine. Jim is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ellouise Lorraine Chastain; daughter, Nadine June Hubbard; son-in-law, Gary Hubbard; brothers, Claude and Charlie; sister, Luevisia; three grandchildren, Dionne, Josh, and Ericka; and five great-grandchildren: Nicholas, Brandon, Nolan, Robert and Harlynn.
