Josephine Nunn Obituary

Josephine Chin Lee Nunn
4/9/1927 - 11/25/2010

Josephine passed away peacefully on November 25, 2010 with all of her children and almost all of her grandchildren by her side. She is the 4th of 7 children and was born in Grass Valley, Calif., to Tung Chin Lee and Rose Chee on April 9, 1927. A few years later her family moved to San Francisco where she excelled as a student. She attended Lowell High School and UC Berkeley majoring in nursing. She met her future husband, Bert Nunn, at UC Berkeley and they were married in 1948. Josephine loved supporting her 7 children with their activities and was an active parent in the schools, 4-H, scouts, Little League , swimming, basketball, gymnastics, dance, wrestling, and tennis. She also loved watching sports on TV and was an avid Cal football fan. Josie and Bert traveled throughout the US in their motorhome along with friends and the Placer Crawlers RV Group. Many of their trips were made to support their 17 grandchildren with their activities and to celebrate birthdays and graduations. Josephine is most well known by her family and friends for the impeccable craftsmanship and artistic talents she displayed in any craft that she pursued. She hand-made porcelain dolls from raw clay to beautiful works of art and for many years made a doll for every grandchild for Christmas. It is estimated that she hand knitted over 700 sweaters. She was also known for her delicious meals she happily cooked for large family gatherings and parties with friends.
She is predeceased by her husband, Bert P. Nunn. Josephine is survived by 3 siblings, Genevieve King, Gladys Gong, and Richard Lee; her children, Carolyn Nunn-Lum (Dickman), Natalie, Harold (Kathy), Ken (Michelle), Clayton (Theda), Stephen (Linda), and Patty Nunn Iba (Wayne); 17 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Dec. 10, 2010 at 10:30 AM at Lassila Funeral Chapel, 551 Grass Valley Highway, Auburn 95603.

Dear Nunns-every one of you..., Our Parents (Kenny and Phyllis McGrew) loved "5th Wheeling" and "RV'ing with Burt and Josie from the West Coast to the Missouri River and back. I heard of the many trips and great fun they had. I know they are around the campfire now telling great stories (most probably not true) but having a great time. We really, really enjoyed them. From the time we did young student projects with 4H at your house to Mr. Nunn reading our Graduating Class awards at Newcastle, to Mrs. Nunn always greeting with a smile and a caring inquiry about our family, we always fondly remember them. I think our parents had more fun 'after' we left home than when we 'were' home.
Your parents were genuinely and truly awesome.

Mrs. Nunn liked to have fun. Once in the 6th grade Mr. Brynes (really laughing) read aloud a note that she had written for Steve it said "Steve was absent because he THOUGHT he was sick". We all started the day with a good laugh. And oh the food she prepared at Spring Frolic time,YUM!!
She was a very sweet lady.

Thank you Auntie Josie, for taking Patty and me to gymnastics and ballet, and to the Music Circus, and to Fosters to get blueberry milkshakes. Thanks for letting me stay with you for summers at a time. I'm glad you got to stay a few weeks at my house this past summer. I miss you lots. Love, Melissa

We are so sorry to hear of Josie passing. She and Bert were beautiful people who raised a wonderful family and we enjoyed their friendship through the years Larry was at Newcastle School and later in retirement. Josie will be, as is Bert, remembered and missed. Our sincere sympathy to the family.
