Robert Earl Smith, age 90, passed away at his home on Sunday, November 28, 2010.
He was born in Durango, Colorado on March 26, 1920. He attended Bayfield High School and Fort Lewis College. He served in the army during World War II in Europe and was honorably discharged January 4, 1946. He married Blanche Knight on January 23, 1946. She preceded him in death in 2008. Robert and Blanche were florists then they farmed, ranched, ran a dairy and raised their four children in Bayfield, Colo., until they moved to Durango in 1964 where Robert worked for the Bureau of Reclamation. He transferred to Auburn in 1974 to work on the Auburn Dam Project as the property manager.
He is survived by daughter Sharon Penn of Thornton, Colo., son Stanley of Oroville, Calif., daughter Judy Perry of Broomfield, Colo., and son Randy of Auburn, Calif.; grandchildren Loren Wertz, Patrick Smith, Heather Perry, Michael Penn, Nele Perry, Roxanne Penn, Robert Smith and step-grandson Jonathan Gritman. Also survived by sister, Betty Conwell of Globe, Ariz.
Funeral service will be held at Lassila Funeral Chapel on Monday, December 6, 2010, at 12:30 p.m. Interment will be at New Auburn Cemetery.
