Ruth Ruhkala
8/24/1917 - 2/4/2014

Ruth Ruhkala Williams died in her home Tuesday, February 4, 2014 after a very brief illness.
Surrounded by her loving family, she died peacefully overlooking Williams Pond where she had lived for over 70 years. Born August 24, 1917 in Rocklin, Ruth was so anxious to go to school she started first grade at five years old. This marked the beginning of her life-long love of learning and reading. Ruth graduated from Roseville High School, attended Willis Business School in Oakland and the University of California at Berkeley, before working for Paul Chamberlain from 1937-1940 in Auburn. She met and fell in love with James Taylor Williams of Loomis, marrying in 1939. Jim predeceased her in 1975.
Ruth loved Placer County, often joking that she didn't move very far in her life - only three miles! But she explored the world around her and afar. With Jim, they loved the mountains, skiing and camping together even as their family grew. She and Jim both loved to read and shared so many evenings together. Theirs was a happy family.
Ruth resumed her career in 1955 working for the California State Legislature until 1979. After Jim's death and her retirement, Ruth traveled the world. With friends and family she visited China, England, France, Russia, Finland, Costa Rica, and much of the United States.
She is survived by: their four children: Janet Stensaas (Don, deceased), Karen Williams (Frank Pisciotta), Kathleen Edwards (Perry), and Jim Williams (Diane). She leaves seven adoring grandchildren: Mark Stensaas (Weed), Kristen Nobles (Redding), Jennifer Robinson (Auburn), Sarah Maddox (Auburn), Benjamin Edwards (Auburn), Matthew Williams (Loomis), and Carrie Williams (Marysville). She also leaves her beloved twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great grandsons.
Ruth was the eighth of the eleven children born to Matt and Eva Ruhkala of Rocklin. She also leaves her brother, Roy Ruhkala, and sister, Margo Kantola, both of Rocklin, and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Loomis Basin Congregational United Church of Christ, 6440 King Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests you to make a contribution to the Placer Community Foundation in memory of Ruth Williams, P.O. Box 9207, Auburn, CA 95604.
