Tamara Dahn died August 4 at her home in Auburn, California, attended during her illness by her beloved husband, Carl Ludy.
Tamara was born February 19, 1947, in Kassel, Germany, the daughter of Johanna (Nina) Jaworsky and Sylvester Dahn. Her family immigrated to the United States when she was five and settled in New York City, where Tamara became a 1964 graduate of Hunter College High School.
Tamara matriculated from Goucher College, Maryland, (B.A.); Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, DC, (M.A.); UC Davis King Hall (J.D.)
Tamara retired this year from the California State Department of Health Services, where she was a senior staff counsel.
Tamara spent much of her career working for legal services programs, assisting low income people with legal problems involving basic human needs, including access to housing and health. She served as managing attorney of the Auburn Office of Legal Services of Northern California, and later as Executive Director of Solano County Legal Services and Community Legal Services of Santa Clara County.
Tamara was an active participant in bar associations, including serving as the first woman President of the Placer County Bar Association, as a board member of California Women Lawyers, and in a variety of leadership positions with the State Bar of California, including Executive Committee of the Conference of Delegates, member of the Judicial Nominees Evaluation Commission, and most recently, Chair of the Committee on Women in the Law.
She also built a network of supporters in California's northern rural counties that helped many others move into leadership positions where they could give voice to previously unheard or unheeded constituencies.
Tamara was active in the California Women Lawyers Foundation, which recently honored her for "her dedicated mentoring of women law students and young women lawyers and for her visionary leadership and positive contributions to the advancement of women and people of color within the profession."
Tamara was an avid gardener, baker, cook, knitter and wine-maker. She was a wonderful hostess, welcoming friends to elaborate, elegant dinners or producing gourmet meals on a moment's notice. She was famous for her Christmas cookies, which were mailed to family and friends across the country.
In addition to Carl Ludy, her husband of 46 years, she is survived by her brother, Michael Dahn, MD, of Fairfield, Conn., and his children, her beloved nieces and nephews, Jacqueline, Michael, Paul and Judy Dahn. She will also be missed by her husband's family, Beverlie, Lorene, David, Katie and Bryan Ludy.
