Winifred Marie
"Winnie" Dorsey
1927- 4/28/2013

Winifred Marie Dorsey (affectionately known as Winnie) passed away peacefully in her home in Auburn, Calif. on April 28, 2013 at the age of 86 from complications of colon cancer. Winnie was born in Nevada City in 1927 to Eli and Anna Webber. Growing up in Grass Valley, Calif. she loved spending time with her parents and developed a love for gardening and helping others.
Winnie attended grammar school at Mount St Mary's School in Grass Valley, Calif. and graduated from Grass Valley High School in 1944. She had her first job working after school at Conway's Dress Shop and during the war she worked with her mother at Camp Beale in Marysville and DeWitt Hospital in Auburn, Calif.
She loved to sing and performed in a band during the war until she fell in love with an Auburn man, Calvin Curtis Dorsey, and was married on June 3, 1945 while he was on a two week leave from the Navy during World War II.
Winnie and Calvin settled in Auburn where they raised four daughters, Corinne, Jeanette, Marlene and Gail. Winnie was immensely proud of her four daughters and was known for dressing them in identical clothes while they were young.
Winnie loved working with the public and always had a job throughout her life. She can be remembered helping customers as the manager of the downtown Auburn Sprouse-Reitz store with her husband and daughters and then later worked at First American Title as their receptionist. In 1987, Winnie lost her husband Calvin to a massive heart attack and ended a 42 year marriage filled with lots of memories and fun day trip adventures.
After working at First American Title for many years, Winnie worked at The Auburn Journal as their receptionist. Her sparkling blue eyes, snow white hair, warm smile and friendly demeanor could always brighten up anyone's day. After retiring from the Auburn Journal she later found her true calling when she began working at Skyridge School as the Noon Duty Yard Supervisor. Winnie absolutely loved working with the children and often said it was her favorite job because she got to be an acting grandma to lots of children. At the age of 84, her health prevented her from working at the school but always had a special place in her heart for all of her Skyridge kids.
Winnie loved working in her yard tending to her plants, making succulents gardens and mowing her lawn. She enjoyed the constant companionship of her beloved cats and always loved running into people she knew while doing errands.
Winnie was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Dorsey and her daughter, Gail Dorsey. She is survived by her daughters, Corinne Lee (Byron) of Auburn, Jeanette Swisley (Mike) of Auburn, and, Marlene Dorsey of Auburn, grandchildren Jason Lee (Erin), Alisha Lee (Rob Brodeur), Jake Swisley (Sarah), Jeff Swisley, Stacy Bressler (David), and Tory McAvoy. She also had seven great-grandchildren.
Winnie celebrated her life brightly with all of her friends and family on her 80th birthday. The family would like remembrances made to the Skyridge School, 800 Perkins Way Auburn, CA 95603 for the Student Body Fund in honor of Miss Winnie to give back to all the children she found so very special.
A private ceremony will be held with internment at the New Auburn District Cemetery, Calif.
