Allen Erbe

ALLEN WESLEY ERBE, 82 LOVES PARK - Allen Wesley Erbe, 82, of Loves Park, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, in OSF St. Anthony Medical Center. From an early age, Al was known as "Buzzy" by his family. He was born August 10, 1931, in Rockford; the son of Carl H. H. Erbe and Bernita May Harrington. The family moved early to Loves Park where Al attended school. In his high school years they moved to Durand, Illinois, where he attended Durand High School. In 1950, Al joined the Air Force and served at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas and Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was a mechanic, working on planes and attained the rank of SSGT. While in Shreveport, he met Nancy Carolyn Westmoreland, who was part of the USO there. They married on June 7, 1953, in Elysian Fields, Texas. The marriage lasted 47 years. After 4 years he left the military and pursued a career in sheet metal, taking with him the skills he learned in the Air Force. He became an apprentice and then a journeyman in the heating and air conditioning business, working in his early years at Taxon Heating and Air. After a number of years, he bought the business and changed the name to Taxon Blackhawk Heating and Air. He taught his sheet metal skills to students at Rock Valley College which gave him great pride. Al held the offices in the 80's of secretary, director and V.P. for SMACNA, the sheet metal contractors, and member of Union Grange #811 for 49 years. He retired in 1993, and made his love of dancing a top priority. Al never met a stranger and had the wonderful gift of gab. He had an easy smile and loved to make quick jokes to everyone. He will truly be missed. Proud of his family lineage, Al was a 12th direct descendant from Mary Chilton of the Mayflower and an 8th direct descendant from John Catlin of the Deerfield Massacre of 1704.
