Althea Michael

althea r. michael, 71 BELVIDERE - Althea R. Michael, 71, of Belvidere passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2013, in Northwoods Care Centre. Born May 8, 1941, in DeKalb, the daughter of Ernest and Sophie Nelson. Althea was a 1961 graduate of Belvidere High School. After high school she worked briefly at Camcar, before later marrying and becoming a homemaker. She suffered an early divorce and later mental illness followed her for many years. After many years, she married Richard "Mike" Michael on June 11, 1984, and they lived in Sheffield Meadows for some years until she committed herself to Northwoods Care Centre prior to his passing in December 1997. Survivors include her mother, Sophie Nelson of Belvidere; brothers, Arthur (Judy) Nelson of Bella Vista, Ark., David Nelson of Belvidere; uncle, Alfred (Peggy) Nelson of Florida; close cousin, Eunice Robers of Burlington, Wis.; and numerous other cousins, nephews, nieces and their families. Predeceased by husband, Richard Michael; father, Ernest Nelson; and sister, Diania Lee Swanson. Although Althea suffered with mental illness, she was often quite normal and a great friend to Alzheimer patients. The family extends a thank you to all the staff at Northwoods Carte Centre for their many years of care for Althea. Service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, in the Chapel of Memories in Highland Garden of Memories, 9700 Route 76, Belvidere, with visitation from 10 a.m. to time of service; the Rev. Dr. Karl Otto will officiate. Burial in Highland Garden of Memories. In lieu of flowers, memorials in care of the family.
