Alyce Roby

ALYCE M. ROBY, 85 ROCKFORD - Alyce M. Roby, 85, passed away July 12, 2013, at Elders Eden. She was born April 17, 1928, in Durand, Illinois to Clarence A. and Laura M. Goldy, one of seven children. She grew up in the Durand area and graduated from Durand High School in 1946. On August 22, 1948, she married her high school sweetheart, Allen W. Roby in the Durand Methodist Church. She was employed by Illinois Bell Telephone Co. and Central Illinois Gas & Electric Co. She went to work for the Rockford Board of Education in 1961, serving as school secretary at Auburn and Guilford High Schools and Carlson Elementary School and the last two years at the Board of Education office, retiring in 1989. She was a charter member of Riverside Community Church, a long-time golfer with the Sandy Hollow Par Tee and Tuesday Niners Golf Clubs, belonged to a bridge club, the Women Investors Network Club, Board of Education Retired Secretaries and a Durand couples card club for more than fifty years. She was also a member of two golf groups in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. She and Allen enjoyed traveling. They toured Europe, Scandinavia, Ireland, the British Isles, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Alaska, Egypt, Mexico and various Caribbean islands. They also traveled the United States and Canada extensively. After their retirement, they enjoyed spending winters in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Survivors are sons, Douglas A. (Patricia) Roby of Las Cruces, N.M. and their children, Shaun (Janet) Roby and Amanda (Brad) Morgan, and David B. (Judy) Roby of Rockford and their children, Aaron (Alice) Roby and Mariah (Adam) Anast; six great-grandchildren, George, Gianna, Helena, Colin, Zealan and Madelyn; brother, Maurice (Bonnie) Goldy; sister, Margaret (Don) Meissen; sister-in-law, Gyla Tomlinson; many other family members and good friends. Predeceased by parents; stepfather, Guy Eaton; brothers, David and Kenneth Goldy; sisters, Eva (Tony) Barcellona and Betty (Hank) Donahue. The family wishes to thank the staff of Highview in the Woodlands, Elders Eden and Northern Illinois Hospice and Grief Center for their care in the past five years. A gathering of family and friends in celebration of Alyce is set for Friday, July 19, 2013, at Sandy Hollow Golf Course Club House from 5:30 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family for a tree planted near Allen's at Sandy Hollow Golf Course.
