Arthur Sallis

ARTHUR LEE 'ART' SALLIS ROCKFORD - Arthur Lee "Art" Sallis, of Rockford departed this earthly life Monday, March 10, 2014, in his home, surrounded by his family. He was born December 16, 1933, in Sallis, MS; the son of Rufus and Ethel Sallis. Art lived in Rockford since March 21, 1951, coming from Mississippi. He married the former Jewell Franklin October 21, 1956, in Rockford. Art was employed 34 years by Gunite Foundry before retiring. He was also employed by Rockford Register Star, and Rockford Services/Rockford Heath Plans. Art was a member of Providence Missionary Baptist Church, formerly serving in the male chorus. He was a foundering member of the Better Neighborhood Association, a Union Steward for local # 718, also serving in many offices, later to become the president of the Retirees. He attended schools in Mississippi and pursued his GED here in Rockford. Art leaves to cherish many loving memories, his wife of 57 years, Jewell; son, Alvin Gilmore; 3 daughters, Delores Sallis, Diane Sallis and Deetra Sallis; 17 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 5 brothers, Eugene Stingly, John "Fruit", James (Johnice), Danny (Robin), and Michael Sallis; 2 sisters, Lillie Mims and Pearlia Anderson; aunt, Gladys Wright; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including special friends, Andrew McBride, John McNeely, Felix Washington, Fred Vines and Willie Ashford, and many other special friends. He was predeceased by his parents, and 2 brothers, Charles and Joe Sallis. Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Providence Baptist Church, 2209 Clifton Ave., with Pastor DeCarto Draper officiating. Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 2 until 6 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2014, at Carl E. Ponds Funeral Home, 2429 W. State Street.
