Barbara Ross-Shannon

BARBARA BELL ROSS-SHANNON, 88 ROCKFORD - Barbara Bell Ross-Shannon, 88, of Rockford, died Monday, April 14, 2014. She was born to Mary Frances (Fouts) and Bruce Bertram Bell in 1925, in Chicago. Barbara grew up in East Chicago, Ind., and graduated from Roosevelt High School. She attended DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., and received her B.A. degree in 1948. She met Robert "Bob" Ross-Shannon in 1944, while he was home on leave from the Army. He was also a DePauw student. They married in 1948. Barbara worked as a social worker for the Indiana Department of Welfare while Bob attended Northwestern Dental School. They moved to Rockford in 1954, following his completion of service in the Army Dental Corps, and raised four children. In the early 1970's Barbara worked part-time at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and then, in 1974, co-founded Possession Placers, Rockford's first estate sales company, with her friend and neighbor, Clemont Acker. Barbara belonged to Westminster Presbyterian Church, Pi Beta Phi Alumni Club, the University Club, and P.E.O. Chapter CJ. She served as a Girl Scout leader and on the boards of the YWCA, the Children's Home, and Bloom Elementary and Guilford High School PTAs. She was also active in the Junior League, Rockford Memorial Auxiliary, Woman's Club and Rockford Country Club. Barb and Bob moved to Ft. Myers, Fla. in 1991. In Ft. Myers, she was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she was a Stephen Minister, and she was a member of Lee Memorial Auxiliary and the Forest Country Club. Bob died there in 1998, and Barb returned to Rockford in 2004. Upon her return to Rockford, she, Avis Benning, and Lois Boyd continued estate sales until 2013. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; and her brothers, Joe and Jim. She is survived by her children, Bruce (Ruthe Falk) of Rockford, Beth (Forrest) Russell of Minneapolis, Minn., Blair (Bernie) Garceau of Vandalia, Mich., and Bradley (Tracey) of Golden, Colo.; grandchildren, Ben Garceau (Tamara Beauchamp), Callie (Jared) Schlemmer, Bradley Russell, Leah Russell, Delaney Ross-Shannon, and Rob Ross-Shannon; great-grandson, Everett Schlemmer, the cutest baby in the world; and many nieces and nephews. Barbara's family wishes to thank all of the people at P.A. Peterson Center for Health and SwedishAmerican Regional Cancer Center who gave her such attentive and compassionate care. You eased our path. A grateful thank you, also, to all of her friends, including all of you from Westminster Presbyterian Church, whose friendship lit up her days. Memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, April 21, 2014, in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2821 Bell School Rd., with Rev. Dr. William Ward officiating. Memorial visitation from 10 to 11:15 a.m. prior to the service in the church. Memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church or the Natural Land Institute.
