Emmons Johnson

EMMONS EDSEL JOHNSON, 90 ROCKFORD - Emmons Edsel Johnson, 90, of Rockford, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 1, 2014, in his home. Born November 19, 1923, at home on the family homestead in Grantsburg, WI, son of Albert and Ida (Johnson) Johnson, of full Swedish heritage. He attended school in a one-room schoolhouse and worked on the farm. As an adult, he earned his GED. Emmons was proud to have served his country in the Army during WWII, Co. M, 353 Infantry of the 89th Division Rolling W, in the European Theater, having earned the rating of Expert marksman. Emmons married Shirley J. Henriksen, the love of his life, on June 11, 1949, in Minneapolis and moved to Rockford where they raised their 3 children. (They were married for nearly 65 years until her passing last week.) He worked as an inspector for Sundstrand Machine Tool for 32 years until his retirement. Emmons always had a strong faith, and was a longtime member of Salem Lutheran Church, his other family. He was a lifetime member of the VFW. Emmons enjoyed working outdoors, birds, woodworking, Music In the Park, sports (especially baseball) and playing the harmonica. He loved attending all family gatherings and church functions, and his grandchildren's events and activities. We will miss his quiet strength, humble spirit, and his stories. Emmons is lovingly survived by his children, Susan (David) Lippert, Bob (Bonnie) Johnson and John D. Johnson, all of Rockford; grandchildren, Rachel (Erick) Laesch, Emily (Chris) Jennings, Allysa (Chris) Warren, Andrew Lippert, Heather Johnson, and Eric Johnson; step-granddaughter, Jennifer (Aron) Freeman; great-granddaughters, Ellie Laesch and Mabel Grace Jennings; step-granddaughters, Amelia Jennings, Sabrina and Samantha Freeman; and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by wife, Shirley Johnson; brothers, Vernon Johnson and Alden Johnson; sisters, Effie Johnson, Doris Marek, and Mae Swanberg. Special thanks to Pastor Bill, and friends Ray and Esther Hanson. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, March 7, 2014, in Salem Lutheran Church, 1629 S. 6th St. Rockford, with the Rev. William T. Dahlberg officiating. Burial in Scandinavian Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Friday, prior to the service in the church. Memorials to Salem Lutheran Church.
