Genevieve Schlicher

GENEVIEVE WILSON SCHLICHER, 83 ROCKFORD - Genevieve Wilson Schlicher, 83, of Rockford, passed away April 29, 2014, after a brief but life-threatening illness. Born June 22, 1930, in Burlington, Wis., the daughter of John Reid and Anna (Dettman) Wilson. Gen spent her early years on the family corporate farm located outside of Burlington. After completing grammar school in a one-room schoolhouse up the road from the family farm, she graduated from Burlington High School in 1948. After high school, she attended Beloit College in Beloit, Wis., graduating in 1952, with a degree in history and economics. During college, she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority and continued to be active as an alumni up until her death. Gen spoke only of fond memories of her college years and remained close to many of the people she met during that time. After graduating from Beloit, Gen attended graduate school at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., before moving to Rockford to teach at Harlem High School. In December 1954, she married Robert Baldwin Schlicher, a Lake Geneva, Wis., native and World War II veteran. He predeceased her June 12, 1991. After marriage, she taught at Washington Junior High in Rockford and worked summers in the corporate offices at Woodward Governor. She continued her teaching career until having her three children, Roberta, Martha, and Laura. She returned to teaching, working at Lincoln Junior High, Morris Kennedy Middle School, and finally Guilford High School, all in Rockford, once she felt her children were old enough for her to return to work. Always one to take on the underdog and only see the good in people, she became very close to many of her students, supporting them both in and out of the classroom as they faced typical and not-so-typical young adult struggles. Once retired from teaching at Guilford, she began her second career, selling real estate. Just as she did as a teacher, she put her heart and soul into her real estate career, always searching to find the perfect house for every client. Helping her clients find a house they could afford, especially those struggling, was one of her many strengths. As an active member of the Second Congregational Church for many years, she taught and drove for the preschool program, was a Sunday school teacher, a deaconess and an active member of many of the church circles. She was also an active American Association of University Women (AAUW) member and held the office of vice president and program chairman. As a member of Woman's Club, the Retired Teachers' Association, and her bridge group, Gen gave back to her community in much the same way she gave back through her career. She is survived by her children, Roberta (Alex) Miceli, Richmond, Va., Martha (Frank Kartmann) Schlicher, St. Louis, Mo., and Laura (Ron Heger) Schlicher, Naperville, Ill.; four grandchildren, Kate and Alexandra Miceli and Nick and Ryan Heger; and two granddogs, Max and Bandit. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014, in Second Congregational Church, Gordon Chapel, 318 N. Church St., with Pastor David W. Jones officiating. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 2, in Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Ltd., North Main Chapel, 2811 N. Main St. Private family burial in Scandinavian Cemetery.
