Helen Parnaby

HELEN TANNUS PARNABY, 89 ROCKFORD - Helen Tannus Parnaby, 89, of Rockford, died Sunday, June 15, 2014, in Cary, Ill. Born March 17, 1925, in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Shukri and Mabel (Swanson) Tannus. She grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, and received her Bachelor's degree from Augustana College in 1947, and Masters' degree from the University of Illinois in 1958. She married Richard W. "Dick" Parnaby on Dec. 23, 1960, in Decatur, Ill. He predeceased her in 2001. Helen was a social worker whose career began in the 1940s. Most recently, she served as Director of Social Services at Woodstock Memorial Hospital and a home health social worker in Rockford. She was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, where she served numerous functions, both within the church and in its outreach ministries. She is survived by sons, Mark (Zehra) Parnaby of Chicago, Jeffrey (Samia Haddad) Parnaby of Minneapolis, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by son, Matthew; and sisters, Mary Lou Paulsen and Eleanor Taheny. Memorial service will be at noon Saturday, June 21, 2014, in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 920 Third Ave., with Pastor Troy Ann Poulopoulas officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11:45 a.m. prior to the service in the church. Memorials to Lutheran Social Services, 321 W. State St., Rockford, IL 61101.
