Henry Nance Jr.

HENRY L. 'HANK' NANCE JR., 70 ROCKFORD - Henry L. "Hank" Nance Jr., 70, of Rockford, died at 1:25 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2014, in Provena St. Anne Center. Born March 7, 1944, in Winston Salem, N.C., the son of Henry L. and Margaret (Wilkes) Nance Sr. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1965-67 on the U.S.S. Saratoga. Hank spent 13 years in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., earning his Master's degree and teaching. He moved to Rockford in 1980, and taught Business and Economics at Rockford College until 1986. He then moved to Omaha, Neb., with wife, Vicki (Hangartner) and was chairman of the Business Division at the College of St. Mary, and owner of Caravan Traders, a travel accessory store, located in the historic Old Market area of Omaha. Hank and Vicki spent many years together traveling through Europe and North Africa, experiencing the waterways and exploring the ancient ruins and deserts. Upon their return to Rockford in 2001, Hank became the Captain of the Forest City Queen for the Rockford Park District as well as serving as a part-time Park District police officer for several years. He was an avid Harley rider and enjoyed his Hog Chapter. He is survived by his wife, Vicki; brother, Woody (Deidra) Nance; sister-in-law, Karen Mondt; brother-in-law, Scott (Marianne Welsh) Hangartner; and nephew, Jeffrey (Mary Tarraf) Mondt. Predeceased by his parents and brother-in-law, Charles Mondt. Special thank you to the following doctors and staff for the care and compassion they have shown Hank for the past 7 1/2 years: Ajaz M. We also want to extend our thanks to the staff of Provena St. Anne Center and OSF Hospice for their loving care. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014, in Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Ltd., North Main Chapel, 2811 N. Main St. Burial in Scandinavian Cemetery. Visitation from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Rockford Park District Foundation, 401 S.
