Kenneth Meyer

KENNETH W. MEYER, 92 ROCKFORD - Kenneth W. Meyer, 92, went peacefully home to the Lord on March 3, 2014. He was born October 16, 1921, in Rockford to Albert and Clara (Kaltenbach) Meyer. He graduated from Rockford High School in 1939. Ken left for the service on September 20, 1942, serving with the 28th Infantry division for 3 years and earned 5 battle stars in France, Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium. He was one of the first two men from Rockford who were discharged from Camp Grant. Ken met his sweetie face, Irene Johnson, at her 16th birthday party and they had their first date on January 18, 1942. They were married on June 1, 1946, in Rockford. During their 67 years of marriage they were blessed with 3 children: Barbara, Bradley, and Bruce. Ken worked 47 years for Wilson Electric as an electrical contractor until his retirement in 1994. During his lifetime, Ken was a Sunday school superintendant, a Hi-League Counselor, and served as co-chairman of GRASSA (Greater Rockford Area Sunday School Assoc). He also had the privilege of serving as Chairman of CBMC (Christian Business Men Connection), Vice-President of N. Ill Chapter of Electrical Contractors, Bible Secretary for the Gideon's, President of the Jackson School PTA, Rockford Engineering Society, and Rock River Valley Electrical Association. Ken was a faithful servant to the Lord serving as Moderator at First Covenant Church and served with Irene for many years on the visitation team. In his spare time gardening was his passion. He is survived by his wife, Irene; daughter, Barbara (Peter Miranda) Blaising, sons, Bradley (Shelley) Meyer and Bruce (Theresa) Meyer; grandchildren, Julie (Joseph) Hulstedt, Matthew (Shannon) Meyer, Ginger (Ray) Brien, Lauren and Andrew Meyer, Melanie Meyer, Jamie (Greg) Zimmerman, Kimberly Miranda; great-grandchildren, Jacob Hulstedt, Matthew Meyer, Rian and Christian McGraw, Cameron Brien, and Eleana Eckelbarger. Predeceased by his parents and brother, Gerald Meyer. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 7, 2014, in First Evangelical Covenant Church, 316 Wood Rd., with Rev. Peter Dibley and Rev. David Ahrens officiating. Burial in Scandinavian Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014, in Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Ltd., Fred C. Olson Chapel, 1001 Second Ave., and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Friday prior to the service in the church. Memorials may be made to the family for a memorial to be established in Kenneth's name.
