Randy Bleed

RANDY DOUGLAS BLEED, 64 ROCKFORD - Randy Bleed died unexpectedly in his home of a pulmonary embolism. He was born June 11th, 1949, to Wally and Doris Bleed and enjoyed travelling with them and his three brothers as a boy. He dreamed of Alaska and longed to see more of the world. After he graduated from Guilford High School in 1967, he was drawn to the US Marine Corps and became a decorated sergeant, spending 2 years of active service in Vietnam as a scout sniper from 1968 to 1970. He was married to Jill Bertrand from 1972 to 1993 and together they had two beloved children. Prior to retiring earlier this year, Randy worked more than 30 years at Rockford Industrial Welding Supply (now Encompass) as a truck driver, and started and ran for many years his business, Cherry Valley Tree Service. He also served as president for the Cherry Valley Sportsman's Club. Known as the "Gentle Giant" by some and "Rambo" by others, Randy was kind, creative, intelligent, philosophical, soulful, and at times quiet and introspective, yet possessed a sharp wit and loved a good practical joke. Like his father and son, he was a talented woodworker. He enjoyed gardening, nature, and spending time with his family, many close friends, and his beloved cat, Frida. He will be dearly missed by his children, Josh Crow, Jessie (Randy) Mermel; his grandchildren, Sage and Rowan Mermel; his brothers Ron (Bess) Bleed, Terry (Gail) Bleed, Jeff (Laura) Bleed; and his many relatives and dear friends. Memorial services will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 920 Third Avenue Rockford, on Saturday, December 14th. Visitation at 12:30 p.m., with services to commence at 1:30 p.m. Advantage Funeral Home 7000 W. State St. in Rockford is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences can be sent to www.advantagerockford.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Circle of Change, a support service for Veterans, PO Box 9, Rockton, IL, 61072. www.circle-of-change.org.
