STERNE A. ROUFA, 71 MACHESNEY PARK - Sterne A. Roufa, 71, of Machesney Park, died 6:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 22, 2013, surrounded by family at home, after battling cancer and Parkinson's Disease over the last 15 years. Born August 18, 1942, in St. Louis, MO, son of Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Roufa (Jean Prince). Lived 23 years in Machesney Park, coming here from Buffalo, NY. Married to the former Mary E. Skora in Buffalo, on July 15, 1984. Self-employed following retiring from the Army after 21 years of service. Veteran of the Vietnam War serving in multiple worldwide locations. Member of Temple Beth El and Rockford Vietnow & VA groups, Interfaith Council, Young Onset Parkinson's support group, former docent at Anderson Japanese Gardens, board member of Jewish Federation, board member and Sunday school teacher at Temple Beth El. Attended Clayton High School and Missouri Military Academy, received B.S. from Pepperdine University, M.S. from New Mexico State University and Ph.D. in Educational Administration from University of Buffalo. Survivors include wife, Mary; son, Jacob (Caitlin) Roufa; daughter, Rachel (Alex) Bagne; daughter, Jean Kampschroeder; son, Sherman (Anne) Roufa; daughter, Joanna (Darren) Welch; sister, Sondra Dobinsky; brother, Sheldon (Phyllis) Roufa; and five grandchildren. Memorial Service is at Temple Beth El, 1203 Comanche Dr., Monday October 28, at 10 a.m., followed by burial in Rockford Hebrew Cemetery. Arrangements by Sundberg Funeral Home, Ltd. Shiva service at the Roufa residence at 6:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, donations requested to Parkinson's research, cancer research, or local food pantries.
