Raymond Hakala Obituary

RAYMOND J. HAKALA, 84 ROCKFORD - Raymond J. Hakala, 84, of Rockford, passed away Monday, August 26, 2013, as the result of a stroke on May 31, 2008, that left him severely handicapped. Born July 7, 1929, in DeKalb, son of Ossie and Sara (Kandelin) Hakala. Graduated from West High School and then attended Northern Illinois University. Married Mary Van Barriger on November 26, 1949. Ray worked at Woodward Governor for 42 years, beginning in drills and advancing to sales manager. Ray and Mary traveled abroad and shared lake homes with family and friends. Ray taught his four children the qualities of honesty and strong work ethics. He made certain that every summer included a family vacation. Golf was his fun, as was fishing, bowling and his card group. He served as golf chairman of the YMCA Retired Men's group. When vacationing in Arizona, he served as Ranger in the resort. Volunteering his time was common. OSF St. Anthony, Rockford Health System, Meals on Wheels, Habitat and the National Park Service building trails in many states, including Alaska. Despite his paralysis, Ray used his working left arm to volunteer at the Casa Grande Regional Hospital in Casa Grande, Ariz., labeling medical supplies. Even in death, he has volunteered, as his body is donated to science at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, his Alma Mater and birthplace. Survivors include wife, Mary; sons, Greg (Mindy) Hakala of Monticello, Wis., and Todd (Kelli) Franklin of Tennessee; daughters, Beth (Don) Duffy of Bloomington, Minn., and Susan (Craig) Strange of Northbrook; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Eileen (Gene) Elgas of San Diego, Calif. Predeceased by parents; brother, Ralph; and sister, Elaine Hall. The family wishes to thank Crimson Pointe and Hospice of America. A private family service were his wishes. A memorial to be established at a later date in his name. Arrangements by Delehanty Funeral Home Ltd., Loves Park. Visit delehantyfh.com.

Ray was a super guy. I worked for him at Woodward and took him and a couple other great guys, Bob Alloway and Ed VanBarriger, on a Canadian fly-in fishing trip. What a great memory and priviledge. Ray was a kind and very caring man. May God Bless your family.

Hakala's
When I think of dad (BaBa), I think of a caring, kind man who would go the extra mile for all family and friends. I smile when thinking about his business cards after retirement that had the tag line "Everybody loves Ray" because it was so true. Wishing you all the fondest of memories of a great man.
