AMEDEO ANDREW GIORGI ROCKFORD - Amedeo Andrew Giorgi born April 5, 1926, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, May 15, 2013. Born in Rockford, Illinois to Louisa and Gabriel Giorgi. He attended Saint Anthony Grade School and Barbour School, Washington Junior High, where he excelled in swimming, and West High School where he met his wife of 67 years, Marilyn Virgene Wardecker. Served in WWII as a gunner, and postal worker in Guam. He earned his business certificate from Rockford Business College in 1947. Amedeo worked for the Rockford Street Department for 20 years where he served as assistant supervisor. He led the city workers on their first strike for higher wages and better working conditions. He joined the AFLCIO as a business representative for the retail clerks union where he worked for almost 30 years. In the evenings he moonlighted at the United States Postal Service to support his family. Dad loved to travel. He visited every state but Alaska. He loved to watch old movies and listen to jazz. He loved to do things with his family. Dad's favorite saying was "Avanti" which translates to "forward" and "never give up". Amedeo was also a public servant who in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s represented the 5th ward of Rockford with the Winnebago County Government on the county board. He was president of Rockford United Labor and 16th District COPE for many terms, a member of Saint Ambrogio Society, and Saint Anthony Holy Name Society, and represented his 5th ward, 2nd precinct as precinct committeeman for many years. Amedeo was also a member of the Moose Club and the Young Democrats party. He was known to his childhood friends by the nickname, "Mud." He loved everyone and was known and loved by them. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn "Jean" Giorgi; daughters, Kimberly Montalbano and Nancy (Raymond) Derksen; granddaughters, Tracy (Andrew) Hortatsos, Tina (Chris) Badciong and Stephanie (Jeffrey) Lawson; great-grandchildren, Alec Hortatsos, Elaina Hortatsos, Tyler Badciong, Cora Grace Hortatsos, Brooke Badciong and Hanna Lawson. He has a maternal aunt, an uncle, brother, Roland "Gabby" Giorgi, sister, Judy (Arthur) Orlandi and sister-in-law, Josephine Giorgi. He is predeceased by his parents; brother, Edolo "Zeke" Giorgi; and sister, Joyce Giorgi Fatone. He has many lovely nieces, nephews, cousins and several special friends. The family wishes to thank the staff of River Bluff Nursing Home for their loving and thoughtful care and concern. A special thanks to Maryte Liokaitiene, caregiver, and to Doctor Craig Rogers. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2013, in St. Anthony Church, with Father Richard Russo officiating. Interment to follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday May 19, 2013, in Gasparini & Oliveri Funeral Home, from 3 until 6 p.m. Friends may call again Monday morning in the church from 9 a.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family for a memorial to be established at a later date.
