Betty Carlson Obituary

betty may carlson ROANOKE, Va. - At 2:08 p.m. Friday, May 6, 2011, Betty May Carlson met her Savior face to face. Born May 24, 1919, in Rockford, Ill., she attended Highland Elementary School, Lincoln Jr. High, and graduated from Rockford High School. She later earned her undergraduate degree from Grinnell College and was the first in the family to receive a masters degree - hers in physical education from Oregon State University. After a tenure in the Waves during the war years, she traveled extensively. On the invitation of a friend, she visited L'Abri Fellowship in Huemoz, Switzerland, in the Swiss Alps, where she met Dr. Francis and Edith Schaeffer. Through their influence, she became a believer and was thereafter dedicated to influencing others for Christ. Her syndicated column, "I Love People", appeared in the Rockford Moring Star in the 1960s. Betty was "Artist in Residence" at L'Abri Fellowship for 37 years. She wrote many books, including "The Gift of Music", on which she collaborated with Jane Stuart Smith, her companion in the faith. Retiring to live in Roanoke in 2000, her ministry continued to bless many. Survived by her brother, Edwin (Violet) Carlson; and sister-in-law, Jane Carlson of Rockford; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her loving parents, Edwin W. and Alice Carlson; brother, David A. Carlson; and sister, Alice Palmquist. A celebration of her life was held in Roanoke. Donations may be sent to L'Abri Fellowship, 1465 12th Avenue NE, Rochester, MN 55906.
