Donald C. Mercaitis Obituary
Donald C. Mercaitis 1937—2018
Don was born in Rockford, IL to Lorna Johnson Mercaitis (Edward) Setzke and Charles Mercaitis. He was many things; among them a devoted husband of 38 years to Diana Peter Mercaitis and a caring father to six children. He attended East High School until 1954. Don started his career at Anderson Confectionary in 1954, continued to National Lock, and finally retired from Barber Colman in 1999, after 43 years. In fact, the sole reason Don was hired at Barber Colman was due to his basketball talent and the boss' need for someone to play on his industrial league. Don enjoyed fishing with his sons and his wife, cheering on the Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Indians, and Cleveland Browns, and playing basketball at the White Eagles Club until 2001. He enjoyed sports so much that in 1952, he tried out for the Washington Senators, and would have made the team, had he not been outed by his mother for being 15 years old trying to pass for 17 years old.
Don passed away from pulmonary fibrosis in his home surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Diana; sons, Brian Mercaitis, Dave Mercaitis, and John Hamblock; daughters, Kelly Mercaitis, Vicki Hampton, and Kim Morris; sister, Christine (Jim) King; 9 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and 2 nieces. He is predeceased by his mother, father, stepfather, granddaughter, Jennifer, as well as his longtime best friend, Ken.
A celebration of life will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2018, at the White Eagles Club, 235 15th Ave, Rockford, IL 61104. Cremation rites have been accorded. To share a condolence, please visit www.Advantagefunerals.com.
