Edward Sawicki Obituary

EDWARD A. SAWICKI, 93 CHERRY VALLEY - Edward A. Sawicki, 93, of Cherry Valley passed away peacefully Friday, May 27, 2011, in his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born March 24, 1918, in Detroit to Genevieve and Bronislaw Sawicki. Married Estelle Kula on July 4, 1949, in Rockford. Worked for the Rockford Department of Labor for more than 30 years. Served in the Army in World War II in the Pacific Theater, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery. He remained active in the Army Reserves, and attained the rank of colonel. Edward was a long-time member of St. Stanislaus Church, where he served as an usher for many years. Was an active member of the YMCA retired men's club golf and bowling teams. Edward devoted his life as a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Estelle Sawicki; daughter, Chris A. Sawicki-Portillo; son-in-law, Edward Portillo; grandson, Edward C. Portillo of Cherry Valley; sister, Sylvia Studzynski and brother-in-law, Chester Studzynski of Harbor Springs, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents; and brother, Marion Sawicki (Virginia). Our thanks to the Lord for the years we were blessed to have Edward in our lives. In addition, we would like to thank Randy and the staff at Hospice Care of America for their kindness and compassion. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, in St. Stanislaus Church, 201 Buckbee St., with visitation from 9 a.m. to time of service; Father Piotr Sarnicki will officiate.
