EUGENE J. SKERKOSKE, 87 ROCKFORD - Eugene J. Skerkoske, 87, of Rockford died at 10:40 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, in his home. Born Dec. 20, 1924, in Michigan City, Ind.; the son of Stanislaus and Joanna (Kuczynska) Skierkowski. Served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II in Asiatic Pacific Theater. Graduate of Purdue University with a B.S. in chemical engineering. Member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Married Mary Elisabeth Schmitz on Oct. 18, 1952, in Rockford, sharing 60 years of fun and happiness. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend and volunteer during his 62 years in Rockford. Gene taught his family and friends the meaning of generosity of heart and spirit. Gene was a sales engineer for Eclipse Inc., for 47 years, retiring in 1997. A faithful and active member of Cathedral of St. Peter, he also was a member of Rockford Country Club, University Club, American Gas Association, American Society for Metals and Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association. Gene was recognized for his contributions to both AGA and Eclipse by being inducted into their Halls of Fame. Among his interests were golf, bridge club and gardening. Survivors include wife, Mary Elisabeth; children, JoAnn S. Van Dyke of Newport Coast, Calif., Mark E. (Jane) Skerkoske of Baton Rouge, La., and Elizabeth S. Yost of Newport Beach, Calif.; granddaughters, Catherine Van Dyke of Dallas and Caroline Van Dyke of Newport Coast; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Predeceased by brothers, Jim, Walter and John; and sisters, Pauline and Henrietta. Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10, in the Cathedral of St. Peter, 1243 N. Church St., Rockford, with the Very Rev. Carl E. Beekman officiating. Burial in Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, in Olson Funeral & Cremation Services Ltd., North Main Chapel, 2811 N. Main St., Rockford.
