GERALD R. BRYAN, 86 POPLAR GROVE - Gerald R. Bryan, 86, of Poplar Grove passed away at his home, Tuesday, March 1, 2011, surrounded by his loving wife and family. Born Jan. 8, 1925, in Belvidere, the son of Glen and Beulah (Hoage) Bryan. Attended Boone County schools. Married Charlotte L. Gallagher on March 2, 1947, in Belvidere. Served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater from 1943 to 1946. Gerald worked as a night superintendant at CamCar in Belvidere until retiring in 1987. Member of Poplar Grove United Methodist Church, John Hugo Kaiser VFW Post 1461 and American Legion Boone Post 77. Gerald worked as a farmer in earlier years, and one of his favorite hobbies for the past 40 years was raising animals and farming. He loved to spend time with his family. He enjoyed being outdoors and loved to fish, camp, ride horses and tend to his garden. Survivors include wife, Charlotte L. Bryan of Poplar Grove; sons, Terry (Sue) Bryan of South Beloit and Bob (Debbie) Bryan of Naples, Fla.; daughter, Deborah (Steve) Ellwanger of Caledonia; grandchildren, Kimberly Bryan, Patrick, Matthew, Adam and Joshua Bryan, Jessica Roberts, Amanda Smith and Kristen Ellwanger; 19 great-grandchildren; special friends, Terry and Jodi Mitchell. Predeceased by parents; brother, Glen Bryan Jr.; and sister, Beth Smith. Service at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at Poplar Grove United Methodist Church, with visitation from 11 a.m. to time of service; the Rev. Paul Nolden, pastor, will officiate. Interment in Belvidere Cemetery. Arrangements by Belvidere Funeral Home, 815-544-2121.
