GLEA LEWIS HYLAND, 89 ROCKFORD - Glea Lewis Hyland, 89, died Monday, November 25, 2013 after a short illness at Swedish American Hospital. Born March 21, 1924, in Minnesota to Knute and Mary Hyland. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a part of the worlds greatest generation, WWII, where he served as an aviation machinist mate first class from 1942 to 1946, on the CVE 78 USS Savo Island Aircraft Carrier. He met his bride of 66 years at Jostens Manufacturing. During a strike there he helped deliver high school class rings. Meeting a salesman in Rockford and impressed with the city having plenty of jobs, they moved here finding work at Rockford Furniture. They also spent two years on top of Horton Peak in Idaho in a 254 foot cabin as fire lookouts. Glea earned his bachelor degree in wood technology at the University of Minnesota. He then worked in the hydraulic dept. at Sundstrand, then went onto work at Barker Rockford. Later he paired up with Rod Smith forming, Energy Adaptive Grinding and finally retiring from Fenner Hydraulics. He was a skilled woodworker making many lovely things for his wife. He found plans to make a redwood strip canoe and together with friends they built six. He helped build a house for his friend, Bill Means. Bill later paid back those hours and helped Glea build his house. Glea formed many friendships with that kind of loyalty. Survivors, son, Brad (Cindy); daughter, Karey (Wayne); grandchild, Geoffrey (Alexandra); brother, Arlow "Butch". Predeceased by parents; wife, Deloris; brother, Annett "Tony", and Odein. The family would like to express their gratitude to Doctors, Ironside, Patel and Stocker and the nurses and support staff on the 10th floor at Sweds. Also P.A. Peterson and St. Annes.
