LAURENE MARIE LIZER PECATONICA - Laurene Marie Lizer passed away Thursday, May 1, 2014, at her home in Pecatonica, IL, from ALS. She was born October 25, 1955, in Rockford, the daughter of Lawrence and Patricia (Rose) Brandenburg. "Rene" was a 1974 graduate of Pecatonica High School. After graduation she was employed by Ingersoll Milling in Rockford for ten years. Rene's love of children led her to start a daycare in her home and she had fun with "her kids" for the next ten years. She was then employed by the Pecatonica School District, first as a crossing guard and most recently a school bus driver... how she loved her big yellow bus! Sadly, the ALS forced her into early retirement in 2013, after 14 wonderful years. Rene enjoyed her home and loved baking all kinds of goodies. She was fond of picnics and of traveling to South Dakota and Missouri. One of her favorite things to do in the summer was to go to demolition derbies...especially when brother, Scott, was the driver. Rene was a wonderful wife, mother and sister and she will be sadly missed by all who loved her. Survivors include her husband of 23 years, Robert; a daughter, Belinda Phelps of Pecatonica, IL; a son, Pete Lizer of Tulare, SD; a sister, Terry (David) Certa of Shullsburg, WI; two brothers, Terry Leigh (Lisa) Brandenburg of Weatherford, TX and Scott (Carolyn) Brandenburg of Machesney Park, IL; step-siblings, Sherri Sumpter of Maryland and Don Adams of S. Carolina; a loving extended family and many friends. A memorial service, officiated by Rev. Katie Voigt, will be held at the Pecatonica United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2014, followed by a luncheon. A private burial will be held at a later date. Our family wishes to extend a special heartfelt thank you to Dr. Shawn Wallery of the Rockford Brain & Spine Center, to Heartland Hospice, to the Chicago ALS Foundation and to the caregivers from the Department of Rehabilitative Services. We are most grateful for the wonderful care Rene received during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Laurene's name to Heartland Hospice, the Chicago ALS Foundation or to the Laurene Lizer Benefit Fund at Blackhawk Bank, 9609 Forest Hills Rd., Machesney Park, IL 61115.
