Linda Jones Obituary

LINDA (HUFFMAN) JONES, 65 ROCKFORD - Linda (Huffman) Jones, 65, died April 30, 2010, surrounded by devoted family and friends. Born Aug. 24, 1944, in Rockford to Hal and Naomi (Evans) Huffman of Loves Park, Linda was a career human rights activist and a lifelong student, teacher and traveler. Guided by deep faith, she devoted herself to helping the oppressed, the poor and the sick. Linda graduated as salutatorian of Harlem High School in 1962, then earned her B.A. in sociology/anthropology from Millikin University, spending her junior year at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, Africa. She earned a master's in teaching from Antioch College. Married the Rev. David Jones in 1969 and earned a master of arts in philosophy in education from Roosevelt University in 1971. The couple was assigned to Seoul, South Korea, as Presbyterian missionaries. Linda taught at Yonsei University and became deeply involved in human rights work and the movement for true democracy in that country. Her heroic work was recognized in 2003 by the Korean government. The movement is documented in the book "More Than Witnesses," Nightengale Press, which she co-authored. Upon returning to Chicago in 1973, she coordinated the Church Committee for Human Rights in Asia. She taught ESL and history to public school students and coordinated the Chicago CROP Hunger Walk while serving Chicago-area churches pastored by David in DeKalb, Des Plaines and Norwood Park, and raised two wonderful children. She earned her master's in divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, and was preparing to work in prison ministry when she was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in 2000. Cancer wellness centers in greater Chicago helped her greatly. After retiring to Rockford in 2005, she founded Healing Pathways-Cancer Resource Center so that people in her hometown could benefit from the services that helped her. She spoke at its opening ceremony March 23, 2010. Survived by husband, the Rev. David Jones; daughter, Julia (Michael Mann) Jones of Hinckley; son, Jeffrey (Jessica) Jones of St. Paul, Minn.; granddaughter, Michelle Naomi Mann; her mother, Naomi (Elmer) Huffman Whyte of Loves Park; brothers, Gary (Debby) Huffman of Elgin, Rick (Linda) Huffman of Tallahassee, Fla., Bradley (Michele) Huffman of Machesney Park; sister, Janine (Gary) Pumilia of Rockford; as well as nieces and nephews, Ryan and Sarah Huffman, Blake and Rebecca Nunes, Hannah Huffman, Ryan Bingham and Leah Bradley. Also by a worldwide network of very dear friends. Predeceased by her father. Linda was an extraordinary and fun mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend. She loved traveling the world, visiting national parks, learning about other cultures, playing games, gardening and bird watching. Most of all, she loved justice and showed kindness to all people, inspiring those around her to do likewise. Visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 7, in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2821 N. Bell School Road, the startup location of Healing Pathways-Cancer Resource Center. Visitation also at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 8, in First Presbyterian Church of Rockford, 406 N. I don't know where to start. My Mom says that Linda had a big heart. She seemed to know about everything I thought was important- and about so many other topics unfamiliar to me. She was always an example of what I wanted to be when I grow up- committed to her family as part of her service to the world. She raised two amazing children not by sacrificing her commitment to peace and justice and equality but by igniting the same passion in them. Oh, I want to be a mom like that. She knew and loved so many people and I bet they all felt just as special as I did when I was with her. I always felt like she was proud of me and while my family was struggling with my life decisions, she validated them. Her life was always so full and yet she found time for me when I would call or need some hospitality. I wasn't done learning from her. She lived a life that overflowed with generosity and concern for all her neighbors on this planet. The world is richer for having her walk on it.

A true visionary regarding the love and care of all people. Such a wonderful example of a courageous spirit of faith and justice for all.
We will miss her physical presence dearly at Healing Pathways - but her vision is now in operation to help many, and lives on.

I just recently had the pleasure of meeting Linda briefly at the opening of Healing Pathways Cancer Resource Center. It only took a moment to clearly see her passion for helping others. Although our meeting was brief I am thankful my life was touched by her.

We do not know how to express our condelences to you! However, Linda is with us in the comminion of saints, and therefore, I feel deeply that we can celebrate the full life of Linda, her hard and dilligent work rich legacy to us her dedicated activities for the rights of the people who have been in need. I celebrate her dear friendship with me and Marion. I remember one day she visited me in my Toky office of the Documentation for Action Groups in Asia, which was documentation center for human rights in Korea and Asia. Her visit was a pivotal moment for our deep friendship of solidarity in faith and struggle. Linda and you have come to Korea as FI's, I know that she was very closely associated with the Korean Student Christian Federation and the Korean Urban Industrial Mission community. She developed her friends of solidarity with firends in these Korean human rights movements. I have been always aware her dedicated work for the human rights in Korea and Asia after her return to the United States.

In the manner of communion of saints I vision her being surrounted by the circle of friends of FI community, Korea human rights community, BNS community and her close communities in the United States and around the workd, celelbrating her wonderful life and glorifying God. I am so happy that Lind shred her precious friendship with me and my family and with the Korean people. For some of us she is a Korea sister and a member of the Korea people as well as an tegral part of the Korean human rights movement.

Linda will remain as a true friend in my heart and in my life for ever!
