DR. LUIS R. OWANO, 79 ROSCOE - Dr. Luis R. Owano, 79, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012. He was born Nov. 29, 1932, in Chicago, to Bernardino and Audrey (Baity) Owano. He was a graduate and served as class president at Lakeview High School in Chicago. He earned his bachelor's and medical degrees at the University of Illinois-Chicago/Navy Pier, and his specialization in pathology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Knapp in 1956. He served as a Captain in the Army Medical Corps in Korea in the late 1950s. His professional calling came as a pathologist at SwedishAmerican Hospital for 36 years (1965 to 2001); he served as president of the SwedishAmerican Hospital staff. He was professor of pathology at the University of Illinois Medical School in Rockford from 1971 to 1999. He educated nurses and clergy on the effects of cancer. He was an adjunct professor at Illinois State University from 1993 to 2001. He was a life member of the American Society of Cytopathology, an Emeritus Fellow of the College of American Pathology and a member of the James French Society of Pathologists. Beloved and loving husband to Betty; honored and revered father to Keith (Wendy), Cathy (Tim) and Tom (Lynn); adored grandfather of Elise (Josh), Leigh, Isabel and Michael; treasured brother of Margo, Deanna (Mac), Diana (Clif) and Frank (Michele). He is a cherished uncle to countless nieces and nephews. Luis was predeceased by parents; and brothers, Donald, Noel and Dean. He became a master gardener in retirement and spent numerous hours volunteering at the Janesville Rotary Botanical Gardens. He completed an exhaustive index of woody plants for the gardens. He enjoyed photography, painting and doting on his wife, children and grandchildren. Services at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, with the Rev. Dr. Ron Meyer officiating at Honquest Family Funeral Home with Crematory, Roscoe Chapel, 11342 Main St. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the funeral home.
