MARY LOUISE BECKSTRAND, 90 LAKE BARRINGTON - Mary Louise Wentz Beckstrand, 90, formerly of Rockford, died Saturday, March 16, 2013 at her home in Lake Barrington. Born July 9, 1922, in Gettysburg, Penn.; the daughter of the Rev. Dr. Abdel Ross and Edna Mary (Kuhlman) Wentz. Mary Louise married O. Garfield Beckstrand II in June 1945. The couple lived in Rockford from 1947 to 1982 when Gar served as pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church. During those years, Mary Louise was very active in the women's groups at the church and served as a Bethel Bible teacher. A graduate of Gettysburg College, Mary Louise was a French, Latin, and English teacher and worked as a substitute teacher in Rockford public high schools. Following their retirement from Trinity, Mary Louise and Gar lived briefly in Gettysburg and Maryland, traveling extensively throughout the United States as Gar served as a pension representative for the Lutheran Church. They retired to their homes in Ft. Myers, Fla., and Egg Harbor, Wis. The past few years Mary Louise has lived in Lake Barrington. She is survived by three daughters and their families, Barbara and Bruce Abbett of Minneapolis, Minn., their children, Catherine Abbett of Minneapolis, and John Abbett of N.Y.; Martha and David Schank of Durango, Colo., their children, Amanda Schank of Seattle, Wash., and Kevin Schank of Ventura, Calif.; and Karen and Chris Stout, their children, Grayson and Annika Stout, of Kildeer; brother, Frederick Wentz of Gettysburg; and 17 nieces and nephews. Predeceased by husband, the Rev. Dr. O. Garfield Beckstrand II in 1995; and son, Garfield Wentz Beckstrand in 1958. Funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23, in Trinity Lutheran Church, 200 N. First St., with the Rev. Jay Quinn officiating. Burial in Scandinavian Cemetery.
