RICHARD WILLIAM BLAKE, 90 BELVIDERE - Richard William Blake, 90, of Belvidere passed away Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at P.A. Peterson Center for Health, Rockford. Born Sept. 6, 1921, in Belvidere, son of William M. and Sylvia E. (Ferguson) Blake. He graduated from Belvidere High School, president of the class of 1941. Richard served in the U.S. Army Air Corps for six years and was a glider pilot in the European Theatre during World War II. He was captured by Bastogne on Dec. 27, 1944, and was a P.O.W. held at Barah, Germany for 51/2 months. He was awarded the Purple Heart. Married Phyllis J. Balentyne on Aug. 26, 1944, in Belvidere. Richard worked in the Cutter division at Ingersoll Milling for 36 years. A member of St. James Catholic Church. Also life member of John Hugo Kaiser Post 1461 Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Boone Post 77, 93rd Troop Carrier Squadron of WWII, 439th Carrier Group, WWII Combat Flying Group Rockford Association, National Glider Pilot Association, charter member of Ingersoll Retiree Organization, Friends of Ida Public Library, life member Boone County Historical Society, charter member and past president of Y Men's Club, past board member of American Cancer Society, Boone County Men's Garden Club and Bel-Mar Country Club. He was an Eagle Scout and a scout leader and he loved to hunt and fish with his sons. Survivors include sons, Richard (Dee) Blake of Jacksonville, Fla., Gary (Sally) Blake of Belvidere; daughters, Carol (Edwin) Mills of Lincoln and Nancy (Paul) Carner of Caledonia; grandchildren, Michael (Jennifer) Mills, David (Angela) Mills, Emily Mills, Mindy (Jon) Solem, Marcy (Brad) Stark, Elizabeth Carner, Susan Carner, Brent (Jennifer) Blake, Shawn Reynolds and Lloyd (Arlana) Puckitt; great-grandchildren, Zoe Lynn, Roni and Rebekah Blake, Jacob, Wesley, Rebecca, Claire and Payton Mills, Addison Solem, Vincent, Blake and Paul and Martha Stark; and sister, Betty J. Swanson. Predeceased by wife, Phyllis; parents; brother, Merle M. Blake; and sister, Maxine Malmassari. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17 at St. James Catholic Church, with the Rev. Brian A. Geary, pastor, officiating. Interment in Highland Garden of Memories. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at Belvidere Funeral Home, with Rosary at 8 p.m. A memorial is being established in his memory.
