ROBERT L. 'BOB' BAILEY, 85 ROCKFORD - Robert L. "Bob" Bailey, 85, of Rockford died peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012, at Wesley Willows. Bob was born Jan. 10, 1927, in Rockford to Franklin and Helen Lyman (Smith) Bailey. Graduated West High School, Class of 1944. Served his country honorably in World War II. Graduated from Amherst College then returned to his hometown to marry his high school sweetheart, Donna Walker, on June 9, 1951. Bob joined his family in the operation of Fred A. Smith Lumber Co., and became president of the company. Bob enjoyed an active life in the hometown he loved. He garnered many accolades from a life of service to his community. He was a lifelong member of Rockford Country Club, Kiwanis Club of Rockford, and Rotary Club of Rockford, and served as president of each of those organizations. He spearheaded many charitable projects for these and other civic groups. Bob had a great love of music, and supported the Civic Orchestra, serving as fund chairman in 1970 and 1971, as well as the Rockford Symphony Orchestra and Community Concert Association. He was awarded the "Service Above Self Award" from the Thursday Rotary Club and "Diamond Jubilee Award" from the Kiwanis Club of Rockford. He was especially dedicated to the Rockford Boys and Girls Club, Red Cross, and United Way. He also served as a Deacon at Second Congregational Church. His beloved wife, Donna, predeceased him on June 9, 1987. Bob married Virginia Lane on Aug. 10, 1990, who predeceased him on March 29, 2006. Bob had a love of life and an infectious humor that made everyone he knew smile. He was an avid sports enthusiast, enjoying tennis, golf, skiing and fishing. Bob treasured his wonderful circle of friends with whom he shared many adventures, travels and humorous memories. Survived by his children, Kim R. (Carol) Bailey, Lisa B. (Michael) Rowland, Burnie B. (Patricia) Bailey; Virginia's children, Judy (Ken) Besse, Dorene Hinchliff, Elizabeth (Derek) Paris; grandchildren, Erica (Mike) Rowland Erickson, Stuart (Keri) Bailey, Kenzie Rowland, Austen Bailey, Riley Bailey, Anna Bailey, John Hallock, Mike Hallock, Emily Hallock, Austen Besse, Brittney Hinchliff; and his darling great-granddaughters, Lucy, Charlotte, Neha and Aleyah. Predeceased also by his parents; brother, Burnie; and stepson, Bill Hinchliff. Our deepest gratitude and thanks to his devoted "guardian angel", Mrs. Alice Uphouse and the caring staff at Wesley Willows. A memorial celebration of Bob's wonderful life will be hosted by the family at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, at the University Club, 945 N. Main St., Rockford. Private burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
