Rowland akers, 91 MACHESNEY PARK - Rowland Akers, 91, of Machesney Park passed away May 25, 2011, in his home surrounded by his family. Born April 20, 1920, in Kansas City, Kan. Proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945 and the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. He was stationed in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Normandy. In the service he was an auto mechanic and a truck driver. Back home he worked as an inspector for Sundstrand Aviation for 27 years. Married Helen Ohneck in September 1952 in Freeport. Survived by his daughters, Mary (Rod) Schultz, Linda (Doug) Olmstead, Ruth (Mike) Jackson, Carol Akers-Henderson and Kathy Akers; grandchildren, Patricia Burkhamer, Michelle Burkhamer, Christine (Tim) Chapel, Jason (Nancy) Schutz, Erik (Kris) Brinkley and Michael Olmstead; sisters, June Hon, Delores D'Angelo and Sylvia DiTomassi; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents; wife, Helen Akers; son, James Akers; and brother, Fred Akers. Funeral at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, in Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N.
