Shirley Somerville-Gustavison 1919—2019
Shirley Somerville-Gustavison, 99, of Belvidere, IL passed away peacefully surrounded by family, January 10, 2019, in Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center. Shirley was born on October 25, 1919, in Belvidere, IL the daughter of Burdette "Bud" and Mildred (Charter) Buker. She graduated from Belvidere High School, attended beauty school in Rockford and operated a beauty salon out of her home for many years. She enjoyed bird watching, gardening, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She accepted Jesus as her Savior when she was in her 50's and left a wonderful Christian legacy to four generations of believers: herself, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Shirley then made her spiritual home at First Free Evangelical Church in Rockford. One of Shirley's proudest accomplishments was being a caregiver to her husband and her mom in the years preceding their death.
She is loved and missed by her children, Gary (Susan) Somerville, Dee (Les) Reid; 6 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her first husband of 50 years, Wayne Somerville and her second husband, Wayne Gustavison; parents; and siblings, Charles Buker, Richard Buker and Barbara Bennett.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center, 3470 N Alpine Rd, Rockford, IL 61114. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. till 10:45 a.m. prior to service. Burial in Belvidere Cemetery. Memorials to be made to the family for the benefit of Fairhaven Nursing Home. The family would especially like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful nursing and support staff at Fairhaven Nursing Home and Northern Illinois Hospice.
