My deepest sympathy goes out to the friends and family that have lost a great person. It's not very often that you find somebody that loves what they do like he did, he's the reason you see many kids as "mini flagmen" in the stands. God Speed and Rest in Peace

To the powell family. We are saddened by your loss. His style was one of a kind and will be forever in our memories. Prayers are with you always to help you carry on his legacy. We were honored to have known tom and to be there for his last lap at the track and to see him go to his new home with our lord jesus christ.

Not being a Rockford native like my husband and moving here from central Illinois I quickly learned about the Rockford Speedway history when we started attending race events. Because I'm a people watcher to buy a ticket for me was almost a waste of money. I didn't appreciate the sport for what it is or what it meant to the community. But with each race I attended I was more educated about the track and how it "worked". When someone would say, "Watch the starter." did it mean the green and yellow lights on the track? Was it the announcer? Was it the pace car? It turned out the starter was a person named Tom Powell in the crows nest who let the fans and drivers know what calls were being made by hand signals and waving different flags. As I watched Tom it was obvious he brought a personality and style to the job with the way he presented himself and demonstrated his knowledge of the sport's rules. He took his job seriously and drivers and fans respected that. In my eyes Tom represented the job of starter at the small short track as if he were flagging for the big guys of Nascar! Who wouldn't appreciate that?! He had a winning inclusive smile and people were genuinely proud of him. When he climbed that ladder to his post he brought excitement to the races with his sense of showmanship, the way he carried himself, wore his uniform and communicated with fans and drivers with hands, body and flags! The Rockford Speedway was blessed to have someone like Tom Powell who enhanced the image of the track by who he was and how he chose to give it his all! Rest in peace Tom Powell. The Speedway is not the same with you gone.

I AM SO VERY SORRY TO TOM'S WIFE, CHILDREN & OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS & FRIENDS FOR THE LOSS OF TOM. I'VE KNOWN HIM, SINCE MIDDLE SCHOOL, THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL (GUILFORD). I LOST TOUCH WITH HIM FOR A FEW YEARS, UNTIL I STARTED TO GO BACK TO THE "ROCKFORD SPEEDWAY". WHERE WE RAN INTO EACH OTHER, AGAIN. WE WERE ABLE TO GET CAUGHT UP, AND TALKED ABOUT THE GOOD OLD DAYS, WHEN WE FIRST MET IN SCHOOL. HE WAS VERY TALENTED AT HIS JOB, THAT HE LOVED, VERY MUCH!! YOU WILL BE DEEPLY MISSED "TOM TOM". He will so missed so terribly much for so terribly long. So many events will not be the same! His influence, style, showmanship and knowledge was so evident and anticipated..
Hopefully knowing how many people loved and will miss "TP" and the fact of all the lives he has positively touched, gives you some peace.

To The Busekros Family: It has been a long time but we always enjoyed watching racing while Tom flagged at Rockford Speedway. Remember one re-start many years ago when he got onto the track and was "stopping cars" with his foot - that shows a lot of respect for him! He definitely has his own style. So very, very sorry for your loss.
