WILLIAM H. BRANOM BELVIDERE - Bill Branom, the co-owner and publisher of The Boone County Shopper, Inc., passed away Monday, March 26, 2012, from a short illness. He was the son of Dr. W. Lowell Branom and Henriette Knecht Branom of Lincoln. As a young boy, he was very active in the Boy Scouts and earned his Eagle Badge, a top honor. After graduating from Lincoln High in 1950, Bill attended the University of Illinois and was a member of Beta Theta Phi Fraternity. He graduated in 1954, with a bachelors degree in journalism. Bill came to Belvidere to work for the Belvidere Daily Republican in advertising. Bill served in the Army for two years, mainly stationed in Panama. Coming back to Belvidere, he worked for Value Check until he became a partner with Jim Pratt at The Boone County Shopper. Bill married Yvonne Jones, who was a speech pathologist for District 100, on June 29, 1963. They have two sons, Edward and Matthew, who are currently the co-owners and publishers of The Boone County Shopper. Bill was very active civically. Some of his activities include: Jaycees, I.O.U. Club, First United Methodist Church Board, chairman of Judi Ford's Miss America Homecoming, YMCA fundraising board for the Belvidere YMCA building, MFCP Board, Belvidere Rotary, and Belvidere Cemetery Board. Bill was awarded the Doctor of Civic Betterment in 1970. His main passion was U of I. He authored Illini Spirit, was a member of the Dad's Day Association, a member of Rockford Area Illini Club, and an avid fan. He won the Lou Liay Spirit Award for extraordinary alumni service. Bill is loved and will be missed by his wife, Yvonne; sons, Edward and Matthew (Tara) Branom; and granddaughter, Abigail. Predeceased by his parents and brother, Richard. Service at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 31, at First United Methodist Church, 610 Bonus Ave., Belvidere. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 30, at Belvidere Funeral Home, 203 Logan Ave., Belvidere. A memorial fund will be established in Bill's Honor.
