William Doll Obituary

WILLIAM E. DOLL, 82 ROCKFORD - William E. Doll, 82, of Rockford died Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, in SwedishAmerican Hospital, after a short illness. Born March 6, 1928, in Omro, Wis., the son of William and Edna (Davidson) Doll. Married Audrey Blank on July 16, 1955. Bill started his career as a teacher and football coach at Manawa and Ashland high schools and retired from Sundstrand as a personnel director. He played the saxophone and clarinet in numerous bands including his own "Bill Doll Jazztet." He played consistently at Franchesco's, Fibs, Stockholm Inn, The Butterfly Club and The Manor. He also played at many of the 4th of July parades and On the Waterfront. He was a member and director of the Rockford Barbershoppers for the past 38 years. Also, he sang baritone in his Barbershop Quartet, The Tag-A-Longs. One thing that Bill always said was, "When you are harmonizing in four parts, you can't be mad at anybody." He won the RAMI lifetime achievement award and several Best of Rockford Awards. He also enjoyed reading, hiking, traveling, making a fire in the fireplace and drinking a strong cup of coffee. Bill loved his family dearly and would do anything to support them. He was a wonderful husband and father. Survived by his wife of 55 years, Audrey Doll; children, Dan Doll, Jane Doll, Jerry Doll, Diane Doll and Cathy (Paul) Doll Marsh; granddaughter, Danielle Doll; grandson, Zachary Marsh; sister, Janet Clark; brother-in-law, Dr. Richard Clark; sister-in-law, Margaret Doll; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. As the Doll family knows, we share your shock at these sudden, tragic turn of events. Something told us, though, that something could have been wrong when Bill asked David to help him pack up his gear after the Val Aires played at the Stockholm Inn in October. We always went to help Valeri's Dad, Val Eddy pack up, but slim, seemingly tireless Bill always packed his instruments himself. Not this time though, and now it makes sense. Not only do we know Bill from playing various gigs with Dad, including the Stockholm Inn monthly gig, but also because our whole family took Yoga from Audrey in the 1970s. They are a special family. The Mardi Gras gigs will never be the same without Bill and our cousin Frank Guzzardo. How we enjoyed the P.A. Peterson Mardi Gras party last year. This is so eerie because we thought we'd always see Bill, with his great ties and red clarinet. And Audrey, looking like a 30-something little "doll" as usual, in the audience or on the dance floor. Dad says not many musicians know the older tunes anymore....who will sing "Hello Dolly" for us now? This just can't be....we weren't at all prepared for this. Bill was just a gentle, quiet man and a great performer. We will miss Audrey at the Stockholm Inn gigs and hope that she comes back sometime. We were glad to be able to make the funeral and our condolences certainly continue to go out to Audrey and their children. We are so happy that we could do something for Bill in nominating him for the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rockford Area Music Industry (RAMIs). He certainly deserved it. Audrey has also given so much to people, with her knowledge of health and positive attitude. Valeri cherishes the long letter that Audrey wrote her to encourage her to teach Yoga at Southern Illinois University many years ago. She is a legend of her own. We often wondered how Bill kept up with her! A lovely family, and a great gentleman...it won't seem to the same in Val's band now, but the music, we guess, must play on. Godspeed Bill and God Bless You!

Audrey. . . . I'm saddened for the loss and more so that health issues prevent me from attending Bill's services today. We spent many years together celebrating our love of great music from hundreds of bandstands. It has been more than a pleasure to work with a true professional which created a great friendship. He was tops in his fields and definitely "one of the good guys" as applauded by the masses!
