Obituary Condolences

RUTH L. AITKEN, 92 ROCKFORD - Ruth L. Aitken, 92, of Rockford died at 12:55 p.m. Monday, July 2, 2012, in P.A. Peterson Center for Health. Born April 25, 1920, in Rockford, daughter of John Elof and Jennie (Johnson) Anderson. Graduate of Rockford Central High School class of 1937 and St. Anthony Hospital Nurses Training in 1941. Ruth served as a 1st Lt. in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II. She was among the first nurses on Okinawa. She married Richard L. Aitken on Feb. 16, 1946, in Rockford; he died Dec. 9, 2010. She was a nurse for the office of Dr. Paul Wilkinson for 23 years, retiring in 1982. Member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she participated in L.C.W., Monica Unit, A Capella Choir and the Mr. and Mrs. Club, and was a Sunday school teacher. She is survived by children, John (Mary) Aitken of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Kathryn (James) Rasch of Rockford; grandchildren, Paul Aitken and Rebecca (Justin) Sharpe; and great-grandsons, Andrew and Jackson Sharpe. Also predeceased by three sisters; two brothers; and special aunt, Olga A. Johnson. Special thanks to Dr. Joseph Ross and the staff at P.A. Peterson. Funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 6, in Zion Lutheran Church, 925 Fifth Ave., with the Rev. Dr. Michael Thomas officiating. Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
