PAUL BRIAN MICHAEL SHIMAITIS, 73 ROCKFORD - Paul Brian Michael Shimaitis, 73, died in Sycamore, Illinois on Friday, April 4, 2014, after a brief illness. Born January 16, 1941 to Vito and Minnie Ola (O'Neal) Shimaitis, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. A life-long resident of Rockford, Paul was a retired 30-year detective of the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department, and also served as a court security officer after his retirement. Paul was a United States Navy veteran and member of the American Legion, member of Rock Run Long Rifles and the Beloit Rifle Club. Paul is survived by his wife of almost 35 years, Janice (Woodard); son, Brian (Sue) Shimaitis; granddaughters, Madison and Samantha Shimaitis; brother, Richard (Gail) Shimaitis; nephews, Richard and Chad Shimaitis; special pets, Sophie and Jake. Predeceased by parents, Vito and Minnie Ola Shimaitis; grandparents, Paul and Bernice (Granny) Shimaitis; and sister, Wendy Bogdonas. Visitation from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at Honquest Family Funeral Home with Crematory, 4311 N. Mulford Rd., Loves Park. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 10, at St. Bernadette's Catholic Church, 2400 Bell Ave., Rockford. Burial rites at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
