PAUL JAMES GESSNER, 72 ROSCOE - Paul James Gessner, 72, Roscoe, Illinois went home to be his Lord Jesus Christ on April 13, 2014, after a year-long battle fighting cancer. Paul was born on April 28, 1941, in Rockton, Illinois. He served in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1980, and retired off the deck of the USS Independence as a Master at Arms Senior Chief. He and his wife returned to the Roscoe/Rockton area to raise their two children. He eventually went to the Cherry Valley Police Dept and was asked to serve with other excellent police officers at the Northern Illinois Auto Theft Task Force, retiring in 2005. Survivors include his present wife, Priscilla; son, Jeff Gessner; daughter, Audra (Eric) Johnson; brother, Jake (Polly) Gessner; four granddaughters; and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 43 years, Sandra (Anderson) Gessner; parents; and two brothers, John and Ronald Gessner. The family would like to thank the Beloit Health System UW Cancer Center doctors and nurses and the Beloit Regional Hospice staff, their loving care will always be remembered. Funeral Ceremonies will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014, in St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 511 West Rockton, Rockton, Illinois, with Reverend Scott Herbert, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, Illinois at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 24, 2014. Visitation will be held at the church from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2014. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family that they will later distribute to one of Paul's favorite charities.
