PHYLLIS PALERMO, 93 ROCKFORD - Phyllis Palermo, 93, of Rockford passed away in her home on Wednesday, March 19, 2014. Her strong faith in Christ saw her through many illnesses and she anticipated her heavenly home going with a calm and peaceful spirit. Born May 16, 1920, in the Roseland neighborhood of Chicago, the daughter of Herbert and Annie (Van Straaten) Parkes. She graduated from Christian Fenger High School in 1937, and went on to work as a comptometer operator at the Sears Roebuck main headquarters, Chicago. Phyllis served in the United States Navy Reserves (Floyd Bennett Field) as a storekeeper 2/c. There she met future husband, Emil, and they married January 25, 1946. Upon returning to Chicago, Phyllis became very active in the Presbyterian Church of Roseland, where she taught church school for many years. In 1967, she returned to the work force and was employed at a busy wholesale florist, a job she truly enjoyed from 1969-1980. Phyllis and her husband moved to Rockford in 2006, to be near family. She was a devoted mother and loved to work crossword puzzles, acrostics, word games and was an avid reader. She enjoyed playing hymns and old favorites on the piano, dancing to the big bands in her youth and matching wits with the contestants on Jeopardy. The family would like to thank caregivers and helpers, Debbie, Michelle, Reuben and Nana, nurse Sue from Northern Illinois Hospice, and Pastor Pam and friends from Grace United Methodist Church for their cards, visits, phone calls and prayers. Phyllis is survived by her husband of 68 years, Emil; daughter, Eileen (the late Robert) Boehler; son, Mark Palermo; grandson, Greg Boehler; granddaughter, Rachel Vaiden; great-granddaughters, Araya and Darian Vaiden; host of nieces and nephews.
